How to sort waste at home so pickup is faster
A ten-minute sort saves everyone time on collection day. Christchurch homes move quickly when rubbish is bagged, green waste is separate, and the tricky items are flagged upfront.
Start with three piles
Walk room to room with bags or boxes labelled: general rubbish, green/garden, and “needs a channel” (e-waste, batteries, chemicals, gas bottles). General rubbish is bagged household waste, packaging and small broken items. Green waste is leaves, branches and lawn clippings kept apart from household rubbish. Needs-a-channel is anything that shouldn’t go in the general truck — we’ll point those to the right local option.
Bag it properly
Sturdy bags, tied at the top, beat thin supermarket bags that split on stairs. Keep sharp items wrapped and separate. If you’ve had a big clean-out, grouping by room helps — kitchen pile, lounge pile, garage pile — so the crew can load in order without double-handling.
Keep the path clear
Clear the run from the pile to the door. It’s the simplest way to protect floors and keep the lift quick. For flats, let us know about stairs, lift access and shared hallways. For houses, mention gravel paths or steep driveways common around Cashmere and the Port Hills.
What not to bag together
Don’t mix soil-heavy garden waste with household rubbish — weight adds up fast and the two suit different channels. Batteries, paint and chemicals should never go in general rubbish; keep them out and we’ll advise the correct Christchurch drop-off.
